The Inheritance weaves together the story of three generations of gay men in New York City attempting to forge a future for themselves amid a turbulent and changing America, decades after the height of the AIDS epidemic. Eric Glass is a political activist engaged to his writer boyfriend, Toby Darling. When two strangers enter their lives—one older and one younger— their plans for marriage come to a screeching halt as they veer in opposite directions into uncharted waters. This fascinating and epic two-part drama is inspired by E.M. Forster’s classic Howards End, and received the 2020 Tony Award for Best Play and the 2019 Olivier Award for Best Play.
“Matthew López has created a brilliant theatrical event with his plays, The Inheritance Parts 1 and 2,” Trinity Rep Artistic Director Curt Columbus said. “The plays are unforgettable for their vivid characters, their glorious language, and their remarkable insight into the American experience of the last half century. Audiences will be swept away by the epic nature of the work, and also by the great, small moments of humanity contained within them.”
CAST AND CREATIVE TEAM
Joe Wilson, Jr. joined Trinity Rep’s resident artistic company in 2004, and has appeared in numerous productions as a performer since. His recent directing credits include last year’s A Christmas Carol and black odyssey (co-directed with Jude Sandy) at Trinity Rep, as well as An Octoroon at The Gamm Theatre.
“As a middle-aged, African-American, gay man who came into an understanding and subsequent acceptance of his sexuality at the end of the AIDS crisis, this show is very personal to me,” Joe said. “The Inheritance is uniquely Trinity Rep in scope and scale, with its beautifully poetic language, creating a moving, sweeping, theatrical event. This play, and the author of the novel from which it is inspired, asks us to “only connect” not in terms of the quantity of our relationships, but their quality. This message is especially poignant as we emerge from a global pandemic, and as we continue to grapple with all that continues to divide us as a nation and world."
Joe will work alongside Michael McGarty (set design), Liza Alexis (costume design), James Horban (lighting design), Peter Sasha Hurowitz (sound design), Rachael Walshe (dramaturg), and Jackie Davis (intimacy choreographer).
The production’s cast features an ensemble primarily of actors local to New England. Cast members include resident company members Jackie Davis, Taavon Gamble, Mauro Hantman, and Stephen Thorne; Brown/Trinity Rep students Ross Barron, David Mattar Merten, Chingwe Padraig Sullivan, and Tobias Wilson; Brown/Trinity Rep alumni Jack Dwyer, Michael Jennings Mahoney, and Rodney Witherspoon II; and guest artists Andrew Holder and Adrian Peguero.
