As 2020 begins, the climate situation is deeply troubling. Carbon emissions are at their highest levels recorded in human history. A new federal report warns of a dangerous feedback loop of melting permafrost emitting carbon into the atmosphere. And we’ve just finished another year of wildfires, torrential flooding and other extreme weather wreaking havoc on communities across the world.
We’re facing a looming global emergency, yet the Trump administration’s response has only brought us closer to the brink of disaster. I think the explanation for this is obvious: The fossil fuel lobby’s dark money breeds corruption.
Last year, the fossil-fuel industry’s obstruction apparatus kept at its dirty work. President Trump formally served notice to quit the Paris climate agreement, and still denies this problem is real. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce – the Chamber of Carbon, as I call it – spent millions to push forward its polluter-sponsored agenda. And former coal and chemical plant lobbyist Andrew Wheeler took over at the EPA.
Despite all this, 2020 offers us a chance to defeat the fossil fuel dark-money machine and take real steps to address climate change. I’m leading this fight, and today I’m asking you to stand with me in defeating dark money and finding climate solutions: Please, will you make a $5 donation to my campaign to make sure we take action on climate change and fight back against the fossil fuel lobby before it’s too late?
2019 wasn’t all bad for the movement against climate change. Rising temperatures and sea levels rose to the top of the public’s consciousness, and more people than ever are demanding action. Warnings about climate-driven economic crashes are beginning to sink in.
I am particularly inspired that Greta Thunberg and young leaders everywhere awoke millions of people in a global movement against climate catastrophe. We’ve turned a corner in bringing the issue to the forefront of public consciousness. That’s because of young activists like Greta and older activists like Jane Fonda and passionate people like you – but our biggest challenge now is turning sentiment into action.
That’s where exposing fossil fuel dark money, calling out fossil fuel front groups, spotlighting fossil fuel lies and pressuring fossil fuel funders come in. Disabling their dirty apparatus brings the day of victory nearer.
I promise you I’ll continue fighting every day to kick the props out from under the fossil fuel industry in Congress, but I need you with me, so I’m asking you to join this movement now: Will you give $5 or more to my campaign to help take on the fossil fuel lobby and prevent climate catastrophe?
Thanks for stepping forward to build momentum in this fight. I look forward to what the new year will bring. Together, we can win.
