Trump’s decision to substantially increase tensions with Iran and endanger
American lives earlier this month, it became clear that Congress needed to
act to prevent him from sending our troops into another endless war in the
That’s why earlier today,
the House passed two amendments that I cosponsored to repeal the 2002 Iraq
Authorization for Use of Military Force that President Trump cited to launch
an airstrike that killed high-level Iranian military leaders and also to
prohibit funding for military action against Iran without explicit
authorization from Congress.
The President does NOT
have the power to declare war, and the Senate should immediately pass these
amendments to ensure that we do not wade unnecessarily into another military

ICYMI: A Bold Plan to
Rebuild Our Infrastructure
Democrats announced our brand-new plan to invest $760 billion over the next
five years in rebuilding our nation’s crumbling infrastructure. This framework
is estimated to create 10 million good-paying jobs as we work to update and
strengthen roads, bridges, airports, railroads, and water systems across
America and right here in Rhode Island.
This plan will be a big
win for our state. Not only will it reduce pollution and improve safety,
it’ll be a boost for our economy. Click here to read the full framework. I look forward to
drafting and passing legislation to turn it into law.
Supporting Our Veterans
The men and women in our Armed
Forces sacrifice so much in defense of our nation. We have an obligation to
ensure they can succeed after their service ends.
Providing job training
opportunities is one way we can do this. On Monday, the House passed the
Supporting Veterans in STEM Careers Act. I supported this legislation to give
vets the opportunity to learn new skills for good-paying jobs in science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics.
When veterans succeed,
America succeeds. I’m pleased to report that this legislation is now headed
to the President’s desk.
129 people take their own
life every day in America. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death
nationwide, but in 90% of all suicide deaths, the victim has an underlying,
potentially treatable mental illness.
Earlier this week, we
passed the bipartisan Advancing Research to Prevent Suicide Act. This
legislation requires the National Science Foundation to provide additional
funding to strengthen scientific suicide research.
This research is
necessary to improve treatment of mental health conditions. In addition, it
will help increase investments in resources for people at risk of suicide.
This is a national crisis, and I’m proud we took this step to secure
resources for those that need help.
